Question: What is our society's obsession with Minecraft?
As we glance back into history, ancient civilizations ruled the world. Whether it's the Aztecs, Romans, Incas, or Egyptians, they all had their time at the top. But there's one civilization in particular that stands out to me, the Greek. Whether it's through superb infrastructure, advanced technology, theology, or battle techniques, my obsession with the Greeks started early on. Another obsession of mine that started a long time ago was Minecraft, which draws similar parallels to ancient Greek life. You heard that right. Minecraft, arguably the greatest video game of all time, is similar to a powerful empire that lived thousands of years ago. A modern-day video game amassing over three hundred million copies is similar to one of the strongest empires of all time. Although commonalities between the two might not seem to exist, I believe that the global obsession with Minecraft stems from ancient civilizations and Greek Mythology.
Now, to properly compare the two, everybody needs to know the basics of Minecraft. Each player spawns into a world with nothing and can craft tools and items based on their surroundings. They can go mining for ore, which can be used to make stronger weapons and armor. Mobs spawn all around the map and will attack you if they see you. The goal is to not die, and players can do whatever they want in the world. They can build massive bases, kill mobs, mine for ore, and do anything else they feel like. Similar to Minecraft, early Greeks started from nothing and expanded their empire to become powerful. For two hundred and fifty years the Greeks spread out and formed colonies all over, collecting resources and followers. Many of them started with nothing and had to use the materials around them to build basic tools and structures. As the years passed, their colonies started to grow, along with getting upgraded recourses as they became more powerful. The Greek empire slowly began to rise, and with it, they set up their capital city, a massive city of beautiful architecture. By then, the Greeks were all-powerful, and nobody could stop them due to their extreme battle strategy and superior weaponry. Are these commonalities starting to become more clear? In both Minecraft and Greek civilizations, people start from nothing, work hard, build structures, gain resources, defeat enemies, and grow to be the strongest people on their respective planets. Though, this is just the start of similarities, as Minecraft draws a resemblance to Greek mythology as well.
